[ back to the shop ]
I wrote this operating instruction for a still young friend of McAirrows. If you are already an adult and you mean, that I should not tell you all these simple things, I give to consider that such operating instructions make a lot of work, two different versions still more than one. Thus:
You have now a genuine McAirrow ® from Hegmans - free inventions . The 'weapon' is not a toy, but a precise sport device, with which you could also hurt yourself or other ones. Therefore be careful and behave in such a way, that nobody will be hurt. Observe the following rules:
On which targets you can aim, if you are inside or in your father's office
Inside you must take an arrow with rubber suction cup ('indoor arrow'). As a target you can use all stable, smooth surfaces, which your mother permits you. In addition, you can paint a target on a white tile (30 x 30 cm). Put a transparent envelope foil from the stationer's shop upon your picture, so that the wet rubber suction cup cannot smear the colour.
If you feel all this to be too complicated and you are already a millionaire, order a target for inside with us.
On which which targets you can aim , if you are outside or in the cellar
For an arrow with softdarttips fasten a piece of carpet with the rubberized side to you on a piece of foam rubber or an ISO mat and put it at a wall in your cellar. You can also go into your garden or to your neighbour's meadow, if you asked him for the permission. Remember, you are a beginner. So do not take a too small piece of carpet in order to hit your target, because if the arrow hits on a wall or a stone, it gets broken.
With pins you can fasten a paper disk or also a balloon on the carpet. Now your target is ready for use. If you shoot outside, you also can take pieces of polystyrene or paperboard, which fall down, if you hit them. Place this kind of targets always down in the grass.
If you feel all this to be too complicated and you are already a millionaire, order a target for outside with us.
Your arrows
Your arrows are made of plastic straws, a layer transparent package tape, a 'point' and two or more 'feathers' for the stable flight. The arrows's weight is approximately two grams (30 grains) or somewhat more (the 'Indoor' arrow is about 60 grains). If a straw breaks, you can get a new one in every subsidiary of the company, which sells Hamburgers. The CEO of this company told me to use the company's brand under no circumstances , so that I should not tell you, that their name also begins with Mc......
Before you make an arrow, test the straw, you want to use. If it is straight (roll it over the desk top) and you can put it onto the blowpipe easily, take it. Some straws are crooked or too thin. For greater durability use a layer transparent package tape (width 50mm) and wrap the straw lengthwise with it. Put the straw over a small rod of wood (6mm diameter) and roll it over the paste side of the package tape. For this work you should use a sm ooth surface, e.g. a pane or a mirror. Please let the rod in the straw for all further work.
To buy feathers go to the archery shop for particular high precision. As feathers you can also cut off seven small sloped (45 degrees) pieces from a plastic straw (length 2cm / diameter 5mm). Paste them at one end of the straw always exactly next to each other. Use adhesive tape (carpet tape) to do so. A little quantity of adhesive at both ends of the 'feathers' prevents loosing them after a few shots. We have stated that such arrows fly better than all other constructions.
If you do not like to use 'do it yourself' points, you can buy softdarttips in a toy shop. You put one centimeter of a suitable transparent plastic tube (diameter 6mm) into the front end of the arrow and then turn the softdarttip inside. The finished arrow then weighs around 30 grain or somewhat more .
Be sure to take arrows with rubber suctions cups for 'Indoor' shooting ('indoor' means that you would use the smooth door of your refrigerator as a target) . A 'Indoor' arrow weighs 60 grains or somewhat more.

Aiming and shooting
Now you must listen very well in order to understand everything: Take your stand five yards away from the target. Make five very large steps or borrow a folding rule from your father. Mark the position and always shoot from there. Pump twice and load, as you read it above. Aim at your target over the rear multi-hole sight and the front eye-bolt.
Pull the trigger always as uniformly as possible. Put the McAirrow ® away and check, where the arrow has hit your target (if you do not find it in the rubber, you just need more exercise). Practice for a while. If the arrow always misses the target even after a longer time of practice, you should change the setting of your rear sight:
arrow is 5 cm higher than center of target: adjust rear sight 2 mm down
arrow is 5 cm lower than center of target: adjust rear sight 2 mm up
arrow is 5 cm left from center of target: adjust rear sight 2 mm to the right
arrow is 5 cm right from center of target: adjust rear sight 2 mm to the left
Adjust the rear sight only if you are sure that you did not totter or move while aiming. When first shooting you can put the McAirrow ® on a chair to prevent tottering while shooting.
If you have enough practice, you hit your target with the model Classic even over larger distances. For a ten meters distance you pump four times (15yards=six times / 20yards=eight times). Use the same hole of the rear sight for distances up to 20 yards. How often you have to pump exactly at a certain distance and whether you must adjust the rear sight or use the next hole of it, you will find out yourself after a time. A lot of practice, experience and in worst case your father can and will help (maybe sometimes also your mother can help). For longer distances (20 - 50 yards) you should note every valid combination of rear-sight-hole (hole spacing 5mm) and number of pumps, which let you hit the center of target. You can fill out a table, as you see beneath this. If you are older and more experienced, you will call all this ballistics.

What you still should know
Your arrows are never quite alike. Therefore it is quite probable, that two arrows hit different. If you are already a professional (that is, you shoot 4 inch groups at 10 yards), then take always the same arrow for a certain adjustment of the rear sight. Particularly at longer distances two different arrows fly rather differently. Outside, the wind causes some problems for the light-weight arrows. Take your McAirrow outside for longer distances only at very calm days.
Even the management of HEGMANS-free inventions had a lot of fun, to see bursting an air balloon at a 50 yards distance. If you practice, you can also have the same experience.

Accessoires / service
You can make yourself targets, arrows and all other things you ever could need. If you are already a millionaire, you can order this or that with us. But be careful with your millions. You could need them for other useful things.
A word to your (german) parents
In Germany we have very draconic weapon laws. A McAirrow is not a weapon in the sense of german law. Nevertheless all friends of McAirrows should observe the above mentioned rules to avoid accidents. We are not responsible for destructions that result from improper treatment of our products. Therefore, please read our directions carefully.
Other products from Hegmans - free inventions
There are many different types of McAirrows ®, and I will develop new ones forever. If you want, have a look at 'www.hegmans.de'. But these types (e. g. 'McAirrow Soda') have astronomic prices. If you want to tell your individual McAirrow-story to your friends, you can send me an e-mail. I will publish your story at 'www.hegmans.de'.

Beside the traditional 'McAirrow target' there are disciplines like 'McAirrow hunting' , 'McAirrow gulf', 'McAirrow gate' as well as 'McAirrow parcours'. All these games are of largest popularity and find great interest even at the TV.
